Guide: How To Get Swish in Sweden
As a newcomer to Sweden, you’ll quickly learn about a service called Swish. Splitting the tab after a night out with friends, paying for a bus ticket, the rent to your landlord - you’ll probably get asked to “swisha”. Swish is one of the most common options to handle all kinds of payments in Sweden today.
What is Swish?
Swish is a mobile payment system launched in 2012 owned by some of the largest Swedish banks, and it has quickly become the go-to for everyday transactions for millions of Swedes.
How Swish Works
Swish allows you to make instant payments using your smartphones by linking your bank account to your personal mobile number. You can transfer money to friends and pay for services with just a few taps on your phone. The system is integrated with the BankID app, ensuring secure and verified transactions.
How To Get Swish
To start using Swish, you need:
- A Swedish bank account.
- The Swish app, available for both Android and iOS (you might need to change location to Sweden in the App Store/Google Play Store to find Swish).
- A registered mobile number (some banks also requires you to have a Swedish number).
- Mobile BankID. If you want to read more about getting BankID in Sweden, we’ve outlined the process in a previous article: Guide: How To Get BankID in Sweden 2025.
