Why Do You Need Car Insurance in Sweden?

Having car insurance is mandatory to drive legally in Sweden, ensuring that all vehicles on Swedish roads are properly insured. In fact; you need to have the basic level of car insurance from the first day of owning a car, even if you're not ready to take it out for a spin just yet. If you’re looking to buy, lease, or own a car by any other means in Sweden - car insurance is a must! Understanding the differences between various car insurance companies and coverage plans might seem tricky. But no worries - that’s why we're here to help, ready to guide you through all you need to know.

Did you know?

In Sweden, having car insurance is a legal requirement. You need to at least have the basic coverage, called Trafikförsäkring, and your coverage should start on the first day of owning your car.

How Does Car Insurance in Sweden Work?

The most basic option of car insurance in Sweden is Third-party Liability Insurance, also called Traffic Insurance ("Trafikförsäkring" in Swedish). In addition, you can sign up for either Partial Coverage Insurance ("Halvförsäkring") or Comprehensive Coverage Insurance ("Helförsäkring").

  • Third-party Liability Insurance/Traffic Insurance: Covers damages you cause to other people and their property while driving your car. To enhance your protection, you can opt for additional coverage.
  • Partial Insurance Coverage: Typically includes additional protection against things like fire, theft, and glass damage.
  • Comprehensive Insurance Coverage: Further covers damage to your own vehicle in the event of a collision. This is valuable if you own a new or expensive car that would be costly to repair or replace with your own funds.

Having the right car insurance is not just a legal obligation in Sweden, but also a safeguard for you. Regardless of if you drive your sedan like a nervous dad with kids in the backseat, your shiny new sports car like Lewis Hamilton, or your crappy station wagon like Clark Griswold - it's wise to have the right car insurance that matches your style on the road. Make sure to properly compare your options, find the car insurance that best matches your needs, and sign up for the right coverage.

Car Insurance in Sweden: Content Comparison

Basic traffic car insurance in Sweden includes the mandatory third-party liability coverage, which covers personal injuries and property damage caused by your car. If you also want protection for damage to your own car, you’ll need either a partial or full coverage policy. Most car insurance plans are pretty similar in structure, and what sets them apart is mainly how they handle different types of claims. You can also add optional extras, and these add-ons could give you extra coverage for things like reduced deductibles for certain damages. In our table below, you'll find the usual content differences between Traffic Car Insurance, Partial Car Insurance and Comprehensive Car Insurance.

How to Choose Car Insurance in Sweden

Before signing up for car insurance in Sweden, there are a few things to keep in mind that will make your comparison easier. Here are some key factors:

  • The value of your car: If you have a new and/or expensive car, this will impact not only the price of your car insurance, but also the coverage you may need. An old Prius? You'll probably get away without burning a hole in your pocket. A Porsche 911? A lot more expensive, but if you drive a Porsche you should be able to afford it.
  • The coverage you need: You at least need the basic level of third-party liability insurance/traffic insurance for your car, but is that enough for you to sleep well at night? Adding additional coverage can bring additional peace of mind, so don’t fall for the temptation of choosing the cheapest option.
  • Your age: The price for car insurance in Sweden usually varies depending on your age.
  • Discounts & Campaigns: Most car insurance companies offer discounts if you bundle other insurances with the same provider. Many companies also have time-limited campaigns and offers, so make sure to be on the lookout.

Binding Time for Car Insurances in Sweden

Binding time for car insurance in Sweden varies between car insurance providers. Typically, car insurance runs for a 365-day period and renews automatically each year. If you still have binding time left, you cannot cancel or switch to another provider. The only time you can cancel a car insurance policy in Sweden with binding time is on the 'Huvudförfallodag' — the last day of your current term. About 30-45 days before this date, you're free to request to switch or cancel, with changes taking effect on the final day of your term.

One exception that allows cancellation during binding time is if you sell your car and no longer need insurance. In that case, you can contact your provider to cancel. For companies without binding time, like Hedvig, you're free to cancel at any time.

What Happens If I Drive A Car Without Car Insurance in Sweden?

Simply put, don’t do this! As mentioned earlier, it’s a legal requirement in Sweden to have valid car insurance, so you might face legal charges. You must have at least the most basic third-party liability insurance/traffic insurance coverage from the first day of owning a car. Be smart and don't risk starting your new life in Sweden on the wrong side of the law.

Did you know?

If you don't sign up for car insurance from the first day of you owning a car, as per the Swedish legal requirement, you will have to pay a daily (!) fee to Swedish Motor Insurers (TFF) of around €18 (180 SEK), for each day that your car is uninsured. In order to avoid this fee, make sure to have your car insurance in place from day one of your car ownership.

Car Insurance In Sweden Without a Swedish Personal Identity Number

You cannot legally own a car in Sweden without either a Swedish Personal Identity Number ("Personnummer") or a Coordination Number ("Samordningsnummer"). However, with some car insurance companies, you can sign up for the basic car insurance, third-party liability insurance/traffic insurance ("Trafikförsäkring"), without a Swedish Personal Identity Number or Coordination Number.

But wait? How does that add up? I can get a car insurance in Sweden without a personnummer, but I can't legally own a car without a personnummer? How can I get insurance for a car that I don't legally own myself? The answer is quite simple, as there are various other ways besides owning a car where you could need a car insurance:

Leasing a car: You might lease a car rather than own it. Car leases in Sweden may not require you to register the vehicle with a personnummer, but you still need to have insurance for the car while you are driving it. In this case, you can arrange for basic insurance even if the car is not registered in your name.

Short-term or temporary use: You might be renting a car or borrowing one from someone else. Even if the car isn't legally owned by you, some situations may require you to have your own insurance, especially for long-term rentals or specialized arrangements.

Preparing for ownership: If you are in the process of buying a car but are waiting for your Personnummer or Samordningsnummer, you might arrange insurance in advance so you can legally drive the car as soon as ownership is transferred. In Sweden, cars must have insurance from the moment they are on the road, even if the administrative process isn't finalized.

To get additional car insurance coverage though, you will in most cases need a Swedish Personal Identity Number or Coordination Number.

Sign Up for Car Insurance in Sweden Online

Most car insurance companies in Sweden require a Swedish Personal Number and Mobile BankID to sign up online. As mentioned earlier, some providers may allow you to sign up without a Swedish Personal Number, but you'll need to call them to explain your situation and explore your options. In the table below, we’ve outlined the general requirements to sign up online for some popular car insurance companies in Sweden.
