Need to get car insurance in Sweden? We’ve made it easy with this step-by-step guide, so you’ll be ready to hit the road with the right coverage for you.

Step 1: Pick Your Car Insurance Provider

Start off by looking for a Swedish car insurance provider that matches what you need. Whether your focus is on finding the best value for money, the most extensive coverage, or a balance of both, we’ve got reviews of popular car insurance companies in Sweden to help you make sense of your options. Once you’ve narrowed it down to 2-3 interesting options, click on “See your price” to compare costs and plans.

Step 2: Choose the Type of Car Insurance Coverage

To get a tailored quote, most insurers will ask for your Swedish Personal Number, so it’s helpful to have it ready. If you don’t yet have one, don’t worry! We have a guide on how to obtain a Swedish Personal Number.

Next up in the process is to pick the level of coverage that works best for you. In Sweden, car insurance generally comes in three types:

  1. Traffic Insurance (Trafikförsäkring) – Legally required for all vehicles, covering damage and injuries to others in an accident.
  2. Half Insurance (Halvförsäkring) – Includes traffic insurance, plus extras like theft, fire protection, and certain types of damage.
  3. Full Insurance (Helförsäkring) – The most comprehensive option, covering everything included in half insurance, plus damage to your own car.

Step 3: Fill In Your Personal and Vehicle Details

Now it’s time to enter some basic information in the sign up process. You’ll likely need to provide:

  • Your full address
  • Your full name
  • Email and phone number
  • Swedish Personal Number
  • Details about your car, like make, model, year, and registration number
  • Start date for your policy (usually the day you want coverage to start)

Some insurers may also require verification through BankID to proceed, Sweden’s secure digital ID. If you’re unfamiliar with it, our guide on setting up BankID can get you started.

Step 4: Review and Sign Your Policy

You’re almost there! Before you sign, take a moment to go over the terms and contract details. Most companies let you sign your agreement online via BankID, but some also offer other options for finalizing the contract.

Step 5: Ready to Hit The Road!

Once your agreement is confirmed, you’ll receive details about your policy’s start date and coverage terms. Now you’re officially covered, so time to hit the road!
