Ready to set up an energy contract in Sweden? We’ve got you covered with a simple step-by-step guide to get you up and running with an electricity plan in Sweden.

Step 1: Sign Up for the Electricity Grid

First, you need to find out who owns the electricity grid in your area. In Sweden, you’ll need two separate contracts: one for the electricity grid and another for the electricity you use (electricity trade). If you’re unsure about your grid owner, check with your realtor, landlord, or housing society.

When you sign up for the electricity grid, you’ll typically need to provide:

  • Your full address (+ apartment number if applicable)
  • Your full name
  • Email and phone number
  • Swedish Personal Identity Number* (if you don’t have one, contact the electricity provider for other options)
  • Starting date of the agreement (usually the day you move in)
  • Anläggnings-ID, a unique ID for your place. You can ask the previous owner, tenant, or your landlord for this number.

Step 2: Choose Your Electricity Trade Plan

Next, pick the electricity plan that best fits your needs. Options range from fixed-rate plans to variable or hourly rate contracts. Look for plans with fair terms, discounts, or added flexibility. Compare your options and proceed to sign up!

Step 3: Sign Up for Electricity Trade

At this stage, you’ll provide some personal details again, and it’s important that the same person is listed on both the electricity grid and trade contracts. Here’s the usual info they’ll need:

  • Your full address (+ apartment number if applicable)
  • Your full name
  • Email and phone number
  • Swedish Personal Identity Number (or contact the provider for alternatives if you don’t have one)
  • Start date for the agreement (typically your move-in date)
  • Anläggnings-ID, the unique identifier for your place

Some providers may also ask for verification with BankID, Sweden’s digital ID. Don't have BankID yet? We’ve got a guide to help you set up BankID if you need it.

Step 4: Review and Sign Your Agreement

Now you’re almost there! Before you sign, take a quick look at the terms, like payment options (invoice is usually the standard) and contract leghts. Most providers let you sign with BankID, but some offer other ways to confirm.

Step 5: Let There Be Light!

Once your sign-up is complete, you’ll get a confirmation with practical info as well as your starting date. Now, just wait for your moving day, and your electricity will be good to go when you move in!
